Academy Awards 2012: Will 'The Artist' Win Big?

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Meryl Streep might join the acting three-peat club with a third Academy Award. Jean Dujardin could become the first Frenchman to win best actor. Christopher Plummer is in line to become the oldest acting winner ever at 82.

And "The Artist" is favored to become the only silent movie to take the best-picture prize since the first Oscar ceremony 83 years ago.

Along with Streep, Hollywood's big night on Sunday has plenty of returning stars, too, with past Oscar winners and nominees such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams and Nick Nolte in the running again.

The show also has a returning favorite as ringmaster: After an eight-year absence, Billy Crystal is back for his ninth time as host.

Because of a change in voting rules, the Oscars feature nine best-picture nominees for the first time, instead of the 10 they had the last two years.

Competing against "The Artist" for the top honor are Clooney's family drama "The Descendants"; the Deep South tale "The Help," featuring best-actress nominee Viola Davis and supporting-actress favorite Octavia Spencer; and the Paris adventure "Hugo," from director Martin Scorsese.

Also in the lineup: the romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris," from writer-director Woody Allen; Pitt's baseball tale "Moneyball" and his family saga "The Tree of Life"; the World War I epic "War Horse," directed by Steven Spielberg; and Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's Sept. 11 story "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

"Hugo" leads with 11 nominations, with "The Artist" right behind with 10.

Spencer's a virtual lock for supporting actress, having dominated earlier film honors for her breakout role in "The Help" as a brash maid in 1960s Mississippi. The same holds true for Plummer, the front-runner for supporting actor for his role as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in "Beginners."

The lead-acting categories are where the drama lies. Best actress shapes up as a two-woman race between Davis as a courageous maid leading an effort to reveal the hardships of black housekeepers' lives in "The Help" and Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

The record-holder with 17 acting nominations, Streep has won twice and would become only the fifth performer to receive three Oscars. Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan all earned three, while Katharine Hepburn won four.

It's been almost three decades since Streep last received an Oscar, for 1982's "Sophie's Choice." Though she has the most acting nominations, she also has the most losses - 14. Another loss would be her 13th in a row.

Best actor also looks like a two-person contest between Clooney as the distressed patriarch of a Hawaiian clan in "The Descendants" and Dujardin as a silent-era superstar whose career tanks as talking pictures take over in "The Artist."

It would be the second Oscar for Clooney, who won the supporting-actor prize for 2005's "Syriana." While French actresses have won before, among them Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche, Dujardin would be the first actor from France to receive an Oscar.

Dujardin was picked as best actor Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film, where "The Artist" ruled with four prizes, including best picture and director for Michel Hazanavicius, who is favored for the same trophy at the Oscars.

"The Artist" has dominated Hollywood honors this season, winning key prizes at the Golden Globes and awards shows held by the Directors, Producers and Screen Actors guilds.

"This means a lot, because it's a small movie. It's not expensive. We did it with small money," Hazanavicius said backstage at the Spirit Awards. "And it's black and white and silent."

If "The Artist" comes away with the best-picture trophy, it would be the first win for a silent film since the war story "Wings" was named outstanding picture at the inaugural Oscars in 1929.

The 84th Academy Awards show begins at 8:30 p.m. EST, broadcast live on ABC from the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles.

Advice on dealing with the cost of cancer care (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - Cancer care is a commodity, and patients are also consumers. They should ask doctors about the cost of their treatments, or get a friend or relative to do it if they are uncomfortable asking pointed questions. Either way, experts say these are reasonable questions, especially since treatment costs can be financially challenging:

Mitt Romney's new economic plan: Did it just fizzle?

The economic plan unveiled by Mitt Romney Friday offered details on tax reform and Social Security, but several gaffes and a lack of energy could overshadow its content.?

An important speech by Mitt Romney in Detroit, with just days before Michigan voters go to the polls in a primary, probably didn't go as well as the Republican presidential candidate had hoped.

It was billed as a major speech, but the Associated Press described it as offering "few new policy ideas."

Video footage showed Mr. Romney talking to a crowd of some 1,200, gathered in the middle of a football stadium with tens of thousands of empty seats in the background. (Actually, the bad visuals arose because tickets for the speech sold out at the Detroit Economic Club's initial location, leading to a quick change of venue.)

And even as he tried to connect with the car culture of Motor City, the Michigan-raised Romney made a comment that could cement a rich-plutocrat image with many voters: He said his wife drives ?a couple of Cadillacs."?

So will this be known as the flop at Ford Field?

If he ends up losing the state's primary vote on Tuesday, perhaps. But as a statement of policy and purpose, the speech offered several items of note. So here's a look at the more substantive points of what Romney said.

ECONOMIC PLAN. First off, although much of what Romney said wasn't new, the speech revealed that the candidate does have a real economic plan.

That doesn't mean voters all agree with it, and independent economists are still wondering if the numbers all add up. But Romney has put forward a number of concrete ideas connected to a larger vision.

"I want to restore America's promise," he said, citing the nation's tradition as a magnet for optimists, risk-takers, and innovators. He argued that a growing presence of government in the economy means that "we are inches away from no longer being a free economy."

His economic plan includes some elements that are new this week (even if they weren't introduced in the speech itself). Before a Republican debate Wednesday, the Romney campaign fleshed out a tax-reform plan, calling for all personal income-tax rates to drop by 20 percent.

ENTITLEMENT REFORM. Romney also offered some new insights on entitlement reform. He blasted President Obama for saying he would make Medicare and Social Security solvent for future generations, but not offering serious plans.

"A few common-sense reforms will ensure we make good on our promises to today?s seniors while saving Social Security and Medicare for future generations," Romney said.

He called tax hikes "off the table" and said there will be no change for those at or near retirement.

On Social Security, Romney said a slow rise in the retirement age, coupled with slower growth in benefits for higher-income retirees, could fix the program's looming cash-flow imbalance.

On Medicare, Romney has embraced a "premium support" concept in which seniors could choose among insurance providers (including traditional Medicare) and receive government support to ensure they can afford that coverage. Lower-income seniors will receive the most generous benefits.

England's Luke Donald hits an approach shot on the eighth fairway while facing Ernie Els, of South Africa, during the Match Play Championship golf tournament, Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, in Marana, Ariz. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

(AP) ? The good Tiger Woods knocked in a 50-foot birdie putt and drove onto the par-4 15th green, both times to erase a deficit. The bad Tiger Woods took three trips into the desert to lose the hole, once having to hit a shot left-handed.

After all these adventures, Woods had no trouble picking the most important shot he had Wednesday in the Match Play Championship.

"Probably the putt on 18," he said.

It was an 8-foot putt up the hill. It gave him a par, and a hard-earned win over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the opening round. And it allowed him to return Thursday to Dove Mountain, the only objective at this wild tournament.

Luke Donald won't have that privilege.

For the first time since he first qualified for this World Golf Championship in 2005, the world's No. 1 player was beaten in the first round. There is no such thing as an upset, not even for the No. 1 seed, given the 18-hole match and the quality of players.

Even so, not many saw this coming.

Only a year ago, Donald turned in the most dominant performance ever in the Match Play Championship. He never trailed the entire week, and none of his matches ever reached the 18th hole.

Turns out Donald won't be playing the 18th hole this week, either.

He never led against Ernie Els, and started dropping shots in bundles on the back nine until it was time to remove his cap and shake hands on the 14th green.

Els won, 5 and 4, becoming only the third No. 64 seed to win a match since this event began in 1999. Peter O'Malley beat Woods in 2002 at La Costa, and Ross McGowan defeated Steve Stricker two years ago at Dove Mountain.

"I don't think it would have mattered who I played today. I just didn't play well," Donald said. "I struggled. I gave away too many holes and made too many mistakes. You can't do that in match play against anyone, let alone Ernie."

Donald, coming off a year in which he became the first player to capture the money title on the PGA Tour and the European Tour, has not finished among the top 30 in the three tournaments he has played this year. The last time that happened was in August 2009.

He headed home to south Florida for two weeks off before the next WGC event at Doral.

"It's a terrible ride home, believe me," said Els, who has lost five times in the opening round. "I feel for Luke. He's got a lot of pressure on him. Yeah, I know exactly what it feels like."

Matteo Manassero decided to approach this week with no pressure at all. That changed when he build a 3-up lead on Webb Simpson, then had a string of one-putts on the back nine for birdies and par to hold him off.

Everyone feels pressure at some point. Such is the nature of match play.

Rory McIlroy was feeling it right after Donald left the course. The U.S. Open champion seized control by winning four straight holes, and he was 3 up with three holes to play. Then came a bogey on the 16th, and the 17th. Suddenly, he was 1 up and playing the 18th hole against George Coetzee, and he popped up his tee shot that made par a challenge.

Luckily for McIlroy, his opponent failed to take advantage. Coetzee went 60 feet by the pin on his approach and three-putted for bogey. So McIlroy escaped, and with Donald out of the way, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland had a clear path to No. 1.

So does Lee Westwood, who played a tidy round in beating Nicolas Colsaerts.

McIlroy and Westwood could replace Donald atop the world ranking by winning the Match Play Championship.

"Obviously, it's another incentive waking up each morning and knowing that if you win your match at the end of that day, at the end of the week you could be world No. 1," McIlroy said.

Even so, it's best not to look ahead. Too many things can happen, as was the case on a sunny day in the high desert.

?Ian Poulter, the Match Play winner two years ago, suffered his worst loss in nine appearances when Bae Sang-moon beat him, 4 and 3.

?Bill Haas, coming off that monster win at Riviera just three days ago, looked like a winner when he was 1 up on the 17th green and had a 5-foot birdie putt. Ryo Ishikawa holed from 18 feet, Haas missed, and the Japanese star made par on the 18th to win.

?In the most thrilling match of the opening round, Jim Furyk was on the verge of sending Dustin Johnson home early for the fourth straight year after Johnson hit his tee shot into the desert and had to take a penalty drop on the 20th hole. Furyk chipped across the green and three-putted for bogey to lose.

?Rafael Cabrera-Bello was 3 up with three holes to play against Jason Day when he bogeyed three straight holes, and Day beat him with a 4-foot birdie putt on the 19th hole.

Woods was 1 down until he drove the 15th green for a two-putt birdie, won the 16th with a par to go 1 up, and got up-and-down from a bunker after he missed the green from the 18th fairway.

"We both made our share of mistakes, there's no doubt about that," said Woods. "But somehow, I was able to move on."

Woods now plays Nick Watney, who had no trouble beating British Open champion Darren Clarke.

McIlroy, the highest seed remaining, faces Anders Hansen, while Westwood plays Robert Karlsson and No. 4 seed Martin Kaymer faces David Toms, who birdied the last hole to secure a win over Rickie Fowler.

Perhaps the most intriguing match is Kyle Stanley and Brandt Snedeker, who have been in a match play situation before. It was only a month ago when Stanley made triple bogey on the last hole at Torrey Pines, then lost in a playoff to Snedeker.

Stanley went on to win the next week in Phoenix.

There will be three All-American matches, three all-European matches and one all-Australian match. That would be John Senden against Day, and the only downer for the boys Down Under is that they're the only Australians left at Dove Mountain.

Twitter reveals daily emotional rhythms are consistent across cultures

Image: Andrew Rich/Getty Images

?Happy hour? is not when you might expect it to be, according to a new analysis of about half a billion Twitter messages from around the globe. On average, people are chipper when they wake up and become grouchy as the day wears on. This pattern holds true on weekends, too, but is delayed by about two hours?a trend confirmed in tweets from the United Arab Emirates, where the workweek is Sunday through Thursday. The data suggest that sleep schedules strongly influence mood cycles. The duo at Cornell University who carried out the research, published last September in Science, say that the rising popularity of online social media is allowing scientists to study human behavior in surprising new ways.

This article was published in print as "Happy in the Morning."

Online Video Streaming That Works For You

Published by witter | February 18, 2012 | | 26

All businesses use different methods and strategies in order to promote themselves and the products that they are trying to sell. However, a lot of the businesses out there fail to include a vital piece of marketing skill that can often work wonders for a business, whatever field it is in. online video streaming is one of the relatively newer forms of advertising that involves creating a video promoting your company?s products/services and submitting it to various websites online. This is becoming a more common form of search engine optimisation at the moment with more and more people trying to involve themselves and their business in it.

Although online video streaming has quickly become increasingly popular all over the world, the impact it can have on any particular website or business still has not been caught by everyone, making it relatively untouched and still rather a new form of advertising.

This makes your business stand out from the crowd and attracts many more people to it than any normal articles etc. will ever do. People want to read or watch something eye catching that interests them and not something that will bore them as they are reading. Therefore, video marketing is a great way to tap into any source of clientele that you have not already.

Video marketing is also a great way to ensure that your viewers and visitors are always coming back to your site for more of the same. Whilst being informative, it should also be interesting and hold the viewers attention well. It is also advisable, where possible, to make the video that you create funny in parts. People thrive on humour and therefore, it is something that they will remember and will pop up in their minds whenever they are in need of something advertised in your video.

Depending upon the type of style your business is, and what sort of impression you are wanting to create for it, you can make your video do this for you. Video marketing makes a little business quite often seem like a much bigger business and can give the impression of a very professional company at work. This makes people feel much more comfortable and confident in ordering from you and can help you greatly when trying to secure their custom. There are a lot of helpful hints and tips online that can help you in creating and distributing your video too, so make sure you do your research!

[News] ?Energy for a Green Society? implemented to advance ...

Researchers, universities and solar manufacturers from all over Europe, have teamed up alongside ENIAC Joint Undertaking to create a multinational/multidisciplinary program, ?Energy for a Green Society?.

Researchers, universities and solar manufacturers from all over Europe, have teamed up alongside ENIAC Joint Undertaking to create a multinational/multidisciplinary program, ?Energy for a Green Society? (ERG). This is a three-year project looking into topics from sustainable harvesting to smart distribution. These advances include pushing solar-cell efficiency towards 25% and reducing power conversion losses by 20%.

The total cost of the project is ?25.7 million and has been partially funded through a combination of European and national grants, under the rule of ENIAC JU 2010. The participating countries are Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Slovak Republic and United Kingdom.

The ERG has been established to meet Europe?s 2020 climate targets and will address methods of improving solar cell efficiency, reducing power-conversion losses and enhancing energy management strategies. One of the main objectives includes demonstrating commercially viable applications of printable dye-sensitized solar cells, considered to be a low-cost alternative to silicon solutions. The project partners will also research techniques to optimize the use of energy generated by PV systems and smart grids.

?The ERG initiative will contribute to the establishment of a solid electronics design base for Europe and create a set of technology standards for the solar energy sector?, said ERG project coordinator Dr. Francesco Gennaro, also a staff engineer at STMicroelectronics. ?ERG?s goal is to achieve significant efficiency improvements along the whole supply chain from PV panels to grid connection and make them available to all partners.?

Become Your Very Best With These Self Improvement ...

Posted on February 17, 2012

We all go through this life without really ever knowing who we are or what we?re fully capable of. That?s just one of those things that we all must deal with in our own way. Coming to terms with this and realizing what type of person you are, is what personal development is all about. Here are some tips dealing with the subject. Click here to know more about how to build self esteem today.

Do not procrastinate. The longer you put something off, the less likely you are to actually do it. You will also begin to forget why you wanted to do it in the first place. Accomplishing tasks and learning new things will help you grow as a person, so don?t wait to get started on your projects.

Build strong and healthy relationships with good people. The people that you share your life with are going to help you in your journey to a happy life. If you are around negative people, it is not going to help you change your ways and find the life that you want to live.

Speak with your doctor about any adverse medical conditions that you?ve struggled with, whether it is an actual disease or a mysterious symptom that has been bothering you for some time. Most doctors will work with you to create a personal health plan of action, that will serve as a guide for you as you take all recommended steps to eliminate the symptom through a healthy lifestyle change.

In order to make lasting progress with your personal development goals, make the choice to make a habit of your new and better way of living. Habits are very hard to break, so choose to have good habits that help you to go forward on the path to achieving your goals.

Exercising regularly is important. Regular exercise not only gets your body healthy and strong but it can also boost your self confidence. People who work out feel a sense of accomplishment afterward and thus tend to be happier afterward. Working out does not mean that you have to work out for hours in the gym. It is as easy as taking a walk.

Personal growth can take several different avenues. Many people consider spiritual growth as their avenue to personal growth. However, in order to allow oneself to grow spiritually, one should let go of all expectations and anticipations, and just let happen what happens. By being overly analytical you can prevent yourself from experiencing life as it happens.

Doing your best to help people will help you grow as a person! Helping people will make you feel great! Who knows, one day that same person may be able to help you, when you are in need. Go out of your way to help people, if you believe they are need and will appreciate it. If someone disappoints you by their behavior, your time may be better spent elsewhere!

Gaining truth and wisdom in itself is only part of the battle. You must put this truth and wisdom into practice. Knowing and not doing is worse that not even knowing. Once you know the truth, you are accountable to the truth, and you must put it into practice to show the right example.

Stand up for your belief systems. Your convictions make your personal character, so be sure to defend what you think is right. There are times when we?re tempted to step down and follow the herd. However, standing up and being counted can encourage bravery in others and stop injustice before it starts.

Have a positive attitude. Remember that everything is a matter of perspective, and if you start from a positive place every morning, you can carry that around with you, and frame things in the proper way. Soon you will be able to handle problems in a much better way.

Set goals for yourself and strive to reach them. These can be simple things like keeping a houseplant alive longer than you have in the past. Take the time to celebrate all of the things that you accomplish. Celebrating will be your inspiration to reach the next goal that you set for yourself.

Decide whether or not joining a support group is right for you. Joining a support group can be great. Just finding people struggling with the same things you are can be a huge help. On the other hand, if you suffer from something like an eating disorder, a support group probably isn?t the right place for you.

When working on your personal development be sure to keep a positive attitude. It may seem hard as you are trying to improve things that you view as negative, but put a positive spin on it, as negativity will make it less likely that you will succeed in making the changes you want to make.

Applying these tips should help you become more successful in your job and romantic life, accomplish things that matter to you and find out who you really are. Becoming happy takes time and you will have to keep working on this regularly, until you have adopted a lifestyle that satisfies you. Want to know more about ways to improve yourself, then read more about great quotes to live by now.

Jay Weston: Venezuelan Food in Beverly Hills... and Dudamel's ...

2012-02-16-6887101251_2774b247bd.jpg
Restaurateur Camelia Coupal and Musical Director Gustavo Dudamel backstage at LA Phil!

Huffington readers may recall my review last week of the stunning Mahler 8th "Symphony of a Thousand" conducted at the Shrine by the 31-year musical director of the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra, Gustavo Dudamel, accompanied by that orchestra, hundreds of vocal musicians, and the Simon Boliver Youth Symphony from his native Venezuela. Following that concert, where I was hosted by L.A. Symphony Board Member Ginny Mancini, the musicians boarded a chartered 737 jet, all 117 orchestra members, 9 soloists, and 26 staff members, to fly to Caracas, Venezuela, to continue their Mahler cycle there.

Mrs. Mancini and 30 other board members and patrons flew via American and Delta to Caracas on Monday to join the Mahler festivities. Before leaving, she told me that a famed Caracas restaurant, DOC, was hosting a big party for the group... and did I know that they had a Beverly Hills branch? No, I didn't... So this week I gathered my reviewing friends, Penney McTaggart and David Rapoport, and we dined on exciting Venezuelan food at Camelia Coupal's COUPA CAF? (419 N. Canon Drive, Beverly Hills (310) 385-0420, parking at the adjacent city lot).

The charming owner told me that her lively Venezuelan restaurant, open since 2006, featured a completely new style of international dining combining the best of Venezuelan dishes with the philosophy of the modern Slow Foods movement. That's the group which promotes the use of organic and fair trade ingredients. Knowing that I am a coffee fanatic, she said that her beautiful little restaurant on Canon Drive was the only place outside of Venezuela where patrons can enjoy and purchase the nation's shade-grown, hand-picked, patio sun-dried super fair trade organic single-estate Arabica coffee beans roasted in small batches. And, yes, I did consume cup after cup of the very best coffee I have ever had!

It's a gorgeous restaurant featuring an original California Bow Truss ceiling with resort-like spaciousness. The large outdoor seating area in front is like a tropical garden with an exotic water fountain and hand-painted tiles. I know that I will be here most mornings now at a sidewalk table people-watching and sipping a cappuccino ($3/3.50/4), macchiato, or one of their luscious iced drinks. Hot chocolate, hot tea, chai lattes or special Venezuelan drinks will keep me -- and you -- coming back for many more. Such an incredible find in the heart of Beverly Hills!

The Perico Platter-Dudamel's favorite breakfast dish... scrambled eggs with sweet peppers, tomatoes, onion and spices.
Although Dudamel has not been able to visit the Beverly Hills location, Camelia said his favorite hometown dish is the Perico Platter, a traditional breakfast dish of scrambled eggs with saut?ed mini-sweet peppers, fresh tomatoes and chopped onions, served with a Venezuelan arepa (wheat and gluten-free!) corn cake and a side of fresh fruit ($11). I have not been to Caracas since the early '70s, but I still remember falling in love with arepas, white cornmeal stuffed griddle cakes, here $10 with a side salad, offered with shredded chicken, shredded beef, ham, cheese, veggies... in many combinations. Empanadas are also gluten/wheat free, with many fillings, and there are a handful of Venezuelan specialties which will entice you forever.

You must experience their version of chicken pot pie called polvorosa de pollo ($18), shredded chicken in a crumbled crust pie, the crust with a touch of raw sugar cane pulp, one of the most delicious, savory dishes in memory. I learned that Venezuelans are the second-largest consumers of pasta in the world after Italians, so one of their pasta dishes is a 'must.' A seafood pasta Spaghetti Del Mar ($16) with grilled shrimp and calamari is mildly spicy, but she told me that their best-seller is the Rigatoni Bolognese ($14), beef ragu with tomato sauce. Of course, this being Beverly Hills, there is an extensive menu of traditional lunch and dinner dishes more familiar to the natives of this area -- "Think One Way Wild Salmon" ($23) done the way I like it, medium rare and juicy, a "Coupa Burger" with frites ($13) which I'm told is fabulous, steak frites ($28, ribeye) and "Roasted Rocky Jr. Chicken" ($21).

Pabelion -- the national dish of the country.

Spaghetti Del Mar -- seafood pasta with shrimp and calamari.

Camelia, member of the Coupal family, told me that they have six Coupa caf?s, which includes one in downtown Palo Alto, four on the Stanford University campus, as well as here.

Venezuelan food is not a spicy hot cuisine. It uses ingredients like sweet peppers, garlic, onions, and coriander as base flavors. "Corn is a staple of Venezuelan food and Cachapas are corn griddle pancakes served with fresh white cheese." She made a point that arepa is a corn-based food, which is gluten/wheat free, something which many people today are seeking. "Pabell?n is the national dish of the country, a delicious platter made with shredded beef, rice, black beans, sweet fried plantains, nata, queso blanco and arepitas." ($19, chicken/veggie option available)

At the next table a bunch of youngsters were eating Teque?os. Their mother smilingly said, "It's fried white cheese sticks wrapped in home-made flour dough ($7), and is named for a city just outside of Caracas called Los Teques."

Tequenos are deep-fried cheese sticks... addictive.

Polvorosa de Polo -- their chicken pot pie, my favorite dish.

The best cappuccino I can ever recall drinking... an example of the superb coffee served here.

Back to their coffee! Our waiters, Shane and Nick, said that no one does coffee like Venezuelans. I later learned that coffee was introduced to Venezuela from Martinique in 1730 by Spanish missionaries in the Ciudad Guayana region, and is mostly the more precious Arabica beans. I'm drinking a cup of fresh drip coffee made from the beans I bought last night and it is so rich and aromatic I will be giving up my Cuban Caf? Bustelo for this from now on.

A programming note from Deborah Borda, president of the L.A. Philharmonic: On Saturday, the 18th, the combined two orchestras and a massive chorus will perform Mahler's 8th symphony in a concert in Caracas which will be broadcast live and in hi fi back to some 350 movie theatres in North America. Actor John Lithgow, who traveled to Caracas with them, will emcee the visual event. I understand the theaters are almost sold out but perhaps you can garner a tix or two. Believe me, having seen this concert, it is worth it!

Michael Jackson: The Experience HD review (Digital Trends)

Michael Jackson: The Experience is a game for fans of Jacko. That might seem somewhat obvious, but it is truer than you might think. The previous incarnation of this game for the consoles was a dancing game, so even if you were only a mild fan of Jackson, you could still get into the dancing mechanics of the game. You didn?t need to even have a familiarity with the music to get some enjoyment out of it. Like the 3DS version before it, the Vita version is different.

You know you are in for something odd when you take a dancing game and remove the dancing. It would be like taking a first-person shooter and removing the gun. There?s just something fundamentally wrong with it.

With Michael Jackson: The Experience on the Vita, the dancing is entirely self-inflicted. In other words, you can dance if you choose to, but you won?t get any points or anything. You may receive a few awkward stares, but that?s about it. No, for the Vita, this game has morphed into a rhythm-based game, where you are tasked with using the touchpad to tap in sync with the on-screen icons, mimic certain prompted movements, and try to keep the timing in line with the prompts. So basically you push and swipe on the screen, and there?s your game.?To make sure you hit all the prompts, your best bet will be to set the Vita down in front of you and use two fingers, which can be awkward, and somewhat contradicts the nature of handheld gaming.

The game also offers a meager 15-song track selection, and there aren?t many modes. You have the ?HIStory? faux-campaign, a battle mode for multiplayer, and a few challenges. If you really wanted to, you could complete everything this game has to offer in a few hours, tops.

If you are a fan of Jacko, the music alone might be worth the purchase. Each song plays out like a music video, and some have cut scenes in the middle of a handful of songs that you can view and enjoy. As you watch Jackson dance, you are treated with a digital take on some of his most famous pieces of music. The movements on the screen that you accomplish also affect the way Jackson moves, so you do have a modicum of control over the choreography, but it is minor. For fans, it?s novel. As a game though, it?s lacking.

Besides the shallow nature of a game that requires you to just mimic a few movements with your finger and call it a day, the prompts occasionally are?occasionally?out of sync with the music, especially on the harder settings. For a rhythm game to actually lose the rhythm of the music is hair-pullingly annoying. It is infrequent, but it happens.

Conclusion

If you played the 3DS version, you know what to expect. The stereo sound and the graphics are better, but the game is pretty much the same shell of its console counterparts.

This is a game for fans of Michael Jackson, and only fans of Michael Jackson. And not just fans, but hardcore fans willing to shell out $40 for what amounts to a collection of digital music videos that you can punch the screen to. And really, that is where the biggest problem lies: the value. Strip everything away, and even if you love the finger-swiping controls, there are still only 15 songs included.

The console version was a fun experience that allowed you to immerse yourself in the world of Jacko?s music and dance. Even minus the music, it was still a decent dance game. The Vita version takes that away and replaces it with the ability to tap a screen while listening to music. Yay?

?

Score 4 out of 10

Santorum revels in sudden support ? but how deep? (AP)

BOISE, Idaho. ? The latest Republican to surge in polls, Rick Santorum is trying to turn his newfound strength into something lasting.

Curious Republicans now pack his rallies. Supporters have funneled nearly $4 million to his formerly empty campaign account over the past seven days. And his staff is plotting an aggressive strategy to challenge Mitt Romney in Romney's native Michigan and beyond.

But things don't look so strong just beneath the surface.

Santorum is underfunded and outmanned. He's still lacking in organization, a month and a half into the primary season. And, after he won three contests in a single day last week, his opponents ? on the right and the left ? have begun their own efforts to tear him down.

An upbeat Santorum faced more than 1,000 people in a Boise high school auditorium Tuesday night and said his ideas would carry him through.

He said he's someone "who can overcome the disadvantages of money and media attention and still be in a position to win. Ideas matter."

But his challenges were on display the day before in Tacoma, Wash., where hundreds of supporters waited on cold, wet cement stairs in the dark to see the Republican presidential candidate with whom they're barely familiar.

"I don't know a lot about him, except I know he's more conservative than some of the other candidates like Mitt Romney," said Tanya Franklin, a 54-year-old airline reservationist, who says she'll probably vote for Santorum in her state's March 3 caucuses.

The former Pennsylvania senator has surged to a virtual tie with Romney in nationwide polling following his surprising sweep in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week. But, as Franklin suggests, his popularity may have less to do with who he is than who he isn't. Santorum is not Romney. And with Newt Gingrich's recent decline, that's enough for some conservatives ? at least for now.

Santorum had 30 percent support to 28 percent for Romney in a national poll released this week by the Pew Research Center. But the same poll said 31 percent of all adults had never heard of or couldn't rate him. That's a significantly higher number than for Romney, Gingrich, or Ron Paul. Even among Republicans, one in five told Pew they didn't know enough about Santorum to rate him.

Romney and others are now working to make sure that changes.

The long-time front-runner for the nomination, Romney has deployed surrogates such as a former Santorum Senate colleague, Jim Talent of Missouri, to attack Santorum's support for earmarks in Congress. The conservative Club for Growth has been equally critical. And Romney has been aggressive on the campaign trail, suggesting in recent days that Santorum and Gingrich represent the kind of overspending Washington insiders the tea party abhors.

At the same time, left-leaning groups such as the Center For American Progress and Emily's List are going after Santorum's comments on women. A staunch social conservative, Santorum has been critical of women serving in combat and sometimes in the workplace.

"Sadly the propaganda campaign launched in the 1960s has taken root," reads a passage in Santorum's book. "The radical feminists succeeded in undermining the traditional family and convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."

"These things that Rick Santorum is attacking are broadly supported by women and American families," said Tara McGuinness of the Center for American Progress. "It isn't 1952. Most American families have two working parents."

Santorum says he's not going to sit back and just take such shots.

On Tuesday, he began running ads on Fox News Channel in Michigan. It was a signal to supporters ? and to donors ? that Santorum planned to contest the state where Romney grew up and his father served as governor.

Look for Santorum to emphasize his message on manufacturing revival, especially in hard-hit Michigan. He plans a Thursday economic speech in Detroit, and his advisers see an opening to use Romney's words against him ? especially Romney's 2008 New York Times op-ed titled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."

Sensing vulnerability, Romney tried to pre-empt that in an op-ed Tuesday in The Detroit News. He argued that the government should sell its share in automakers and return the profits to taxpayers.

At the same time, Santorum's advisers are bracing for an onslaught from Romney. They were largely spared in the last trio of states ? Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado.

"We fully expect his search-and-destroy methods to be put on display. That's his M.O.: instead of focusing on his own record, their first inclination is to tear down his opponent," said Hogan Gidley, Santorum's communications chief.

But there are limits to what Santorum's little team can do.

He refuses to hire a pollster and pledges to campaign from his gut. He has brought on veterans from Mike Huckabee's orbit, including the top spokeswoman for Huckabee's 2008 presidential bid and Michele Bachmann's 2012 race. Other aides, too, are coming aboard as Santorum's strategy meetings have grown from just one state to a handful of competitive races.

Yet he lacks a headquarters to have those meetings. Often, Santorum's top aides confer over conference calls or Skype.

"We're building," Santorum said. "We've got a great volunteer base. In some states we're going to have staff. Other states we aren't. We're going to use volunteers."

The disorganization was on display in Boise and caused problems at the Tacoma event, which was held at an outdoor venue adjacent to a camp site of the local Occupy protesters. Lacking the staff to handle such logistics on his own, Santorum had left the planning to the state GOP.

A confident Santorum took the stage as supporters chanted, "We pick Rick!"

"You have very good taste. Thank you," Santorum responded.

But in a matter of minutes, his supporters were overshadowed by shouting from liberal protesters who packed the event. Two were dragged away by police in the midst of his speech.

A week after his trio of victories, Santorum said he's raised nearly $4 million since then and expects to hit that mark soon.

Romney, by contrast, averaged more than $2 million a week over the last three months of 2011. Santorum raised less than $1 million over the entire quarter.

It's unclear how long Romney will wait to take an anti-Santorum message to the airwaves. His allies with the Restore Our Future super PAC already have bought time in several states and plan to go after Santorum aggressively.

Romney aides point to three vulnerabilities beyond Santorum's support for some earmarks.

They note that Santorum was one of a handful of Republicans who voted to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the federal circuit court in 1998. Sotomayor was nominated by President Barack Obama, and confirmed by the Senate, to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009.

Santorum also faced criticism during the New Hampshire and South Carolina primary campaigns for opposing right-to-work legislation, an issue Romney aides expect to re-emerge.

They also expect Santorum's endorsement of then-Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter over Rep. Pat Toomey in the 2004 GOP Senate primary to become an issue. Santorum said in a video appeal for Specter, a social moderate, that the senior Republican senator was "with us on the votes that matter." In 2009, Specter changed his party affiliation to Democrat.

Gingrich won't make things easier for Santorum either.

Despite falling in the polls, the former House speaker says he's the strongest Romney alternative.

The National Review, an influential conservative magazine, published an editorial calling on Gingrich to step aside and endorse Santorum. But Gingrich this week called the article "silly" and said he had no intention of abandoning the race.

Paying For The Annual Eye Exams Tomorrow | Dating Advice Singles

Taking the time to get eye exams is very beneficial to discover new issues of the eyes. This could be something as simple as a slight vision loss due to aging. There are other type of cases where problems could arise due to heredity and having a course of action in mind would be one of the best things anyone could do for the health of their eyes.

The cost of an eye exam is very affordable and for those who have medical insurance, these kinds of items are generally covered. The time that it takes to perform the tests can be done in such a short period of time that one could schedule this as an extended lunch hour. Some patients prefer a later hour after work so they can take their time and make a new selection on a pair of glasses.

A licensed optometrist will perform the initial eye test and may have other staff members perform other types of tests. He will test for distance and clarity of the patient and will in some occasions schedule a time for dilation of the eyes for further testing.

Getting pictures of the eyes is a definite way to see what is going on with the eyes if there is an issue. If the patient is experiencing any kind of difficulties with their eyes, this could be early signs of a problem that might be rectified with some medication or if the situation is more complex surgery could be the next steps.

For the patients that wear eyeglasses on an everyday basis getting a second pair would not be a bad idea. In some cases the individual does not want the second pair of glasses to be the same so they pick a different frame and have the second pair as sunglasses. This is a very smart way to be prepared at all times especially if the patient is always on the go.

For the contact lens lover, glasses should also be a part of the individual?s prescription as there might be times when the individual might not feel like putting on their contacts. Most doctors will test their patients to see just where they are in terms of vision clarity and send them along with a pair of testers prior to purchasing. This is a very worthwhile trial period to see if the lens are comfortable and work well for the patient.

Eye exams are normally done within and hour or two depending if there are current issues. Once one completes the exam he should put it away in a place where he can easily retrieve them in a case of an emergency. If one does a lot of traveling for business or personal it would be very wise to keep this handy piece of paper in their possession. Any optometrist?s office can order the glasses or contacts off of that prescription within the year as expiration happens after one year and must be renewed before any contacts will be prescribed.

If you reside in New York, you need to go to a New York Optician for the eye exam. With the Eye Exam Manhattan there is nothing to fear.

Competing advocacies ? Losing It

There are hundreds of worthy causes out there all vying for your attention and dollars.

I am but one voice in the chorus beseeching you to donate your time, effort and money.

Not content to just live in shame with this disease, I became an MS advocate fairly early on in my diagnosis. I blogged almost immediately, and then joined the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as a volunteer.

I try to raise funds? through the MS Walk, find new ways to get the message out and urge government to pass legislation to improve the quality of life for the hundreds of thousands of other MSers.

Of course it?s something I believe in, because I live it every day. I feel strongly that getting my story out there will help the larger cause.

I may be the only person you know with MS, so I feel a responsibility to educate. I need to get better about that ? recently, I?ve been all about the venting. I also need to show that it is possible to live a fairly normal life, despite it all. I hope that to anyone recently diagnosed with MS, they can find a lifeline here.

While I want you to support me and the MS cause, I know there are others needing your help, too.

This might sound self-defeating, but support them. Whether it be heart disease, cancer, cystic fibrosis, epidermolysis bullosa, muscular dystrophy, infertility, cerebral palsy, Lyme disease, whatever it is, get the word out. Donate $5, $10, $25. Every bit helps. Raise money, if you can. Wear the ribbon. Encourage a friend who is fighting one of these or any other disease.

Trust me, there is no greater feeling.

Man of La Mancha, the 1965 Broadway musical based on the two-volume literary masterpiece The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha) (1605 and 1615), retells Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes? story from the viewpoint of an anguished poet of the theater ? Cervantes himself ? imprisoned and awaiting trial by church and state during the Spanish Inquisition.

Cervantes? empathy with his fictional protagonist, the mad country squire Alonso Quixana, and Quixana?s imagined alter ego, the swashbuckling knight errant Don Quixote, is as palpable on the stage as it is on the page. That is why the original Broadway production of Man of La Mancha, with music by Mitch Leigh, lyrics by Joe Darion, and book by Dale Wasserman, won five 1966 Tony Awards?, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

The play-within-a-play, employed by Wasserman?s script, has become a more contemporary version onstage Feb. 2-19 at Raleigh, NC?s Burning Coal Theatre Company (Jerome Davis, artistic director). The one-act play requires the entire cast on stage throughout the whole performance, and encourages the audience to realize the Quixotic ideals de Cervantes espoused, without the distraction of historically accurate costumes or set design. Instead, this Man of La Mancha allows its actors the freedom to embody their characters in contemporary street clothes ? sweat pants, T-shirts, comfortable shoes ? rather than to work within the confines of tight bodices and suits of armor.

OBIE Award-winning theater artist Randolph Curtis Rand stars as Cervantes and the iconic Don Quixote/Alonso Quixana, smoothly segueing from the embattled poet of the theater facing the Inquisition to the crazed pseudo-knight with ease and aplomb. His face, voice, and angular body change in chameleon fashion as he slides from one character to the other. When Rand introduces himself to the audience in the first few seconds of the play, it is clear that he is an experienced actor, spending years on the stage in both New York and other venues. He sets the theme when describing the charges against Quixana (of ?idealism and bad poetry?) and poetry and idealism resonate throughout the ensuing scenes.

A perfect foil for Rand?s tall and rangy Quixote is David Henderson?s sprightly and eternally optimistic Sancho Panza. Best known as Marley in Theatre in the Park?s annual musical presentation of A Christmas Carol, a role he?s played for 17 years in Raleigh, Henderson?s interpretation of the character who truly supports and protects Quixote/Quixana is one of the highlights of the play. He moves like a leprechaun around the stiffly tall Quixote, peering up at the insanely romantic knight with a combination of reverence and patience; and when it comes time to defend his master/friend, there is no countenance on stage as compassionate as Sancho Panza?s.

But this play would not have any impact at all without a strong leading lady for the role of the lusty and heartbreaking Aldonza/Dulcinea. Yolanda W. Rabun provides just that through her portrayal of the misunderstood whore with a heart. Her sassy, tough, spot-on mezzo soprano is made more powerful and vulnerable when she sings out the side of her mouth and commands the stage with every roll of her hips. The chanteuse is a favorite of Raleigh audiences as an actress, dancer, and jazz singer.

The supporting cast is at times brilliant and, at other times, lackluster. As character actors, they often appear to try too hard, making their roles more caricature than character. In a small venue, such as the Burning Coal Theatre, there?s less of a need for large, across-the-footlights, over-the-top mannerisms and facial expressions; and seasoned actors can tone down those movements/expressions just enough to reach the audience within arm?s length.

Director Tea Alagi?, a Bosnian native who has worked throughout the United States as well as Europe, is adept in delivering a sensitive story of a writer aware that if his audience isn?t initially moved by the narrative he delivers of the romantic Quixote and the changes the mad knight brings about in those he touches. She elicits both sympathy and laughter from the audience through skillful directing of her actors. During the last scene, it was evident that playgoers in the small theater were moved to tears and reminded of their own need for other human beings.

Man of La Mancha sensitively picks the threads of human kindness out of all of us, reminding us through its underlying themes that imagination is often reality, all people have both good and bad personality traits, and that we all tend to cover our pain with a crust designed for self-protection.
